On a freight exchange only price counts. Elsewhere it does not.
Transport companies that source all their work through B2B platforms compete on exactly one attribute: price. The same fleet, the same team and the same reliability are worth considerably more by another route – with direct clients and end customers who are looking for a provider rather than for the cheapest line in a list. We build both: the visibility that generates those enquiries, and the software that gets the operation behind it off paper.
An ongoing project
We are currently working with a transport company on getting out of pure platform dependency – through visibility of its own and direct enquiries. Anonymised, because we have no approval to name them.
Paper leaves the cab
Proof of delivery, damage documentation, vehicle checks: what sits on paper in the cab today belongs on a device – structured, photographed, in the system immediately.
Integration, not replacement
Your transport management system stays in charge. We put apps and portals in front of it and connect them through the existing interfaces.
- Who this is for: hauliers and transport companies, courier and direct delivery services, removals and special transport, warehouse and contract logistics, own-account transport.
- Two typical triggers: first, dependency on B2B freight platforms with the price pressure that comes with it; second, paper in the operation – proof of delivery, vehicle checks, timesheets, damage reports.
- What we build: driver and warehouse apps, digital proof of delivery with photo and signature, real-time status updates, customer portals with consignment tracking, integration with TMS and ERP – and conversion-focused websites for direct enquiries.
- What we are not: a vendor of an off-the-shelf transport management system. Where a standard product is enough, it is cheaper – we build what is missing alongside it.
Getting out of platform dependency.
An ongoing project, anonymised – and a pattern that is widespread in the sector.
A transport company sources its work exclusively through B2B platforms. It works: the vehicles are busy, the handling is well practised, the business has been running for years. It just is not growing any more, and the margin stays wherever a freight exchange sets it.
The reason is structural and has nothing to do with how well the company performs. On a platform, a provider is a line in a list. Reliability, experience, equipment, care with sensitive goods – none of that is visible there, and so none of it can be charged for. What is visible is the price. Sell through that channel alone for years and you get used to quality not being an argument, because it never comes up at the decisive moment.
Direct clients and end customers search in a completely different way. A firm that moves goods regularly, a manufacturer with fragile products, a private customer with a special transport – all of them are looking for a provider, not for the cheapest quote. They read, they compare impressions, they call. And they can only find whoever is visible. For a company that has never needed an outward presentation, that entire market has so far taken place without it.
That is exactly what we are working on in this project: building visibility of its own, so that enquiries arise independently of the platform. The same fleet, the same team – but a negotiating position in which reliability is an argument again. The platform remains a channel; it simply stops being the only one.
The second part is the operation behind it. When direct enquiries start coming in, quoting, dispatch and feedback have to run quickly and traceably – and that is precisely where many transport companies still have paper. Which is why visibility and process digitalization belong in the same plan.
Sector
Transport and haulage
Starting point
Work sourced exclusively through B2B freight platforms; price as the only distinguishing feature
Goal
Direct enquiries from end customers and clients through visibility of its own – the platform as one channel rather than the only one
Second part
A digital enquiry and order journey, so the operation can actually carry the new enquiries

Where logistics loses time and margin every day.
Two problems that are rarely thought about together: the channel the work comes through, and the paper that travels with the job.
One channel sets the price
Sell only through freight exchanges and you are not negotiating. Reliability and equipment are invisible there – and therefore unpaid.
Proof of delivery on paper
A signature on a slip, the slip into the glovebox, the slip into the office at some point. Days pass before invoicing, and every lost slip is an open item.
Damage with no evidence
Transport damage is reported verbally and described later. Without a photo taken at the moment of handover, a clear-cut matter becomes an argument.
The customer calls to ask where the goods are
Every status query ties up somebody in dispatch who could be dispatching instead. The information exists – just not where the customer can look it up.
The vehicle check as a pad of forms
Pre-departure checks on paper, filed in a folder. When it matters, that is supposed to become evidence nobody can find in reasonable time.
Hours and expenses at month end
Captured on slips, added up in the office, queried with drivers who are long back on the road. A process that creates the same work every single month.
What we build for logistics and transport.
Concrete use cases – from the cab, the warehouse, dispatch and sales.
“As a driver I want to complete the proof of delivery on my phone.”
Signature on the screen, a photo of the load, timestamp and position – in the system immediately. The document reaches the office in seconds rather than days, and the invoice can go out earlier.
App development“As a driver I want to document damage before it becomes disputed.”
Guided capture with mandatory photos right at handover. What would have become an argument later is a documented fact with a time and a place.
“As a customer I want to see where my consignment is – without phoning.”
A customer portal with consignment status, appointments and documents. Every status query somebody answers for themselves takes load off dispatch.
“As a dispatcher I want to see status updates without making calls.”
Arrival, loading, departure, delivery reported from the driver app – in one overview instead of fifteen phone calls a day.
“As an operator I want vehicle checks and hours captured digitally.”
Checklists and time tracking on the device, with a history and a filing system you can actually analyse – instead of folders in which, when it matters, nobody finds anything.
Administration & Back Office“As management I want enquiries that do not come from the freight exchange.”
A website that makes the company visible as a provider rather than as a line of pricing – with a clear enquiry journey for direct clients and end customers.
Established Businesses & GrowthWhat this looks like technically.
None of it assumes you replace your transport management system. On the contrary: it stays in charge, and we build around it.
- A driver app for the road – Runs on iOS and Android, works on poor reception too and syncs as soon as there is a connection again. We prefer to build with Flutter, because one codebase serves both platforms – which halves the effort of building and maintaining it.
- Offline thought about first – A vehicle regularly stands where there is no signal – in a hall, in an underground car park, in a dead spot. Capture that fails there does not get used. Which is why offline capability is not an option for us but the starting point.
- TMS and ERP integration – Handover to your transport management system or ERP through its interfaces. No rebuild of the core system, no double maintenance – the app is a capture interface, not a second system.
- A customer portal as a web application – Runs in the browser, with nothing for the customer to install. Consignment status, documents, contacts – with access you manage yourself.
- Reporting for management – Punctuality, utilization, damage rate, processing times: figures out of the data that accrues anyway – instead of a spreadsheet somebody fills in at month end.
- Visibility as a component of its own – Website and enquiry journey for the direct business. Technically independent of the rest, but part of the same plan in substance – otherwise enquiries arrive at an operation that cannot handle them.

Common questions from logistics and transport.
We already use a transport management system. Does this fit together?
Yes, and that is the normal case. We do not replace your TMS – we build the parts it does not cover, or that cannot be operated on the device, and hand over through the existing interfaces. Your system stays in charge, there is no double maintenance, and you stay independent of us.
Does a driver app work without a signal?
It has to, or it will not get used. We build so that capture, photos and signature work locally on the device and sync automatically as soon as there is a connection again. The driver notices nothing about the network – that is the only state in which an app like this survives daily use.
Is a website of our own worth it if we get enough work through platforms?
Enough work and a good margin are two different things. On a freight exchange the price is the only visible attribute – reliability, equipment and experience go unpaid. Direct enquiries arise in a completely different negotiating position. Whether that adds up for you depends on your segment; we assess that beforehand rather than asserting it.
How long does it take before a driver app is in use?
Considerably less time than most people expect – provided the scope stays narrow. A proof of delivery with photo, signature and handover to the TMS is a clearly bounded case. What makes projects long is not the features but unclear processes: who is allowed to do what, what happens when things deviate, what the exception looks like. So we settle that first.
What about data protection for driver data and location tracking?
A sensitive subject, and rightly so. Employee location data is subject to particular requirements, and in businesses with a works council, co-determination is practically always required. We build with data minimization – the position at the moment of delivery is something different from continuous tracking – and agree the scope beforehand. The employment law assessment belongs with you and your legal advisers.
Can you integrate with our telematics?
If your provider offers an interface: usually yes. Often the better question, though, is whether the telematics data is needed at all – for a digital proof of delivery, the time, the place of capture and a photo are normally enough. We check that before building, because every additional integration means permanent maintenance.
We are a small operator with a handful of vehicles. Is it worth it for us?
Often especially then. Small operators rarely have an end-to-end system, but they do have plenty of paper and short decision paths – lean capture has an immediate effect there. And because we develop with AI assistance and actively keep the scope small, getting started costs less than the reputation of custom software suggests.
Where does your work come from?
If the answer is “from the platform”, a conversation is worth having. And if there is still paper in the cab, all the more so.
