Frequently asked questions about React Native desktop apps.
Can't I just build a desktop app myself with AI?
For a prototype: yes. For an application that holds up in daily work, ships code-signed and stays maintainable: rarely. AI generates code, but not architecture, code signing, system integration and the many details that decide success. We are AI-first ourselves and build every app AI-assisted – faster, but with the experience of React Native apps we have been running in the stores together with our partners since 2018. That combination is what you get when you have your React Native desktop app built with us.
Is React Native really ready for the desktop?
For Windows, yes: React Native for Windows is developed by Microsoft and runs in production in Office. The macOS variant is also official, but has a smaller community and fewer ready-made desktop libraries. We check your specific case up front – not in the middle of the project.
Can mobile and desktop apps share the same code?
Yes, to a large extent: business logic, data access and many components are shared; only layouts and interaction adapt to screen, mouse and keyboard. If a React Native mobile app already exists, the desktop is more of a next step than a fresh start.
What about the web – can we carry that along?
Via react-native-web you can share logic and part of the UI across desktop, mobile and web. How much of that makes sense depends on the project – we decide by value, not by principle.
When would you NOT recommend React Native for the desktop?
When the desktop is clearly the core and the app is very graphics- or hardware-heavy, or needs maximum native polish per platform. Then Flutter Desktop or native development is usually the better choice – and we say so openly instead of forcing React Native.
How are updates distributed?
In two parts: the JavaScript portion can be shipped promptly via over-the-air update (CodePush / EAS Update); the native shell is updated through the store, an installer or your IT management. We define the right path early, because it affects the build and signing.
Do we need code signing?
Yes – Windows and macOS warn about unsigned applications. On macOS, signing and notarization by Apple are part of the release; on Windows, the installer needs a signing certificate. We set both up properly once so your users can install without warnings.
Is macOS support on par with Windows?
Honestly, not quite: React Native for Windows is the most mature and most widely used, while the macOS variant is stable but smaller. For pure Mac projects with high native demands we therefore also weigh SwiftUI/native.
Does the app work offline?
Yes, if the concept provides for it: local data storage on the machine and optional synchronization once the connection returns. For environments with limited connectivity we plan offline operation from the start instead of retrofitting it.
