Replacing VBA legacy systems – future-proof instead of grown.
VBA macros, Excel tools and Access databases grown over years keep business-critical processes running – from production planning and quoting to shipping. They work, until they don't. We replace VBA legacy systems in a controlled way, develop them further or rebuild them as modern, maintainable software – without interrupting your ongoing operations.
Analysis
Assessment of your VBA landscape with a clear priority list and effort estimate.
Further development
Clean up, secure and extend existing systems – when that is the economical path.
Redevelopment
Migrate proven business logic into modern languages and architectures.
Why VBA legacy systems are a risk today.
VBA won't disappear overnight – but its technological base isn't getting younger. Microsoft no longer actively develops VBA, has already deprecated VBScript, and web and mobile versions of Microsoft 365 don't execute VBA macros at all. If you are planning ahead, act now – in an orderly fashion instead of under time pressure.
Dependence on one person ("that one colleague …")
The crucial macro was written years ago by someone who left the company long ago. Nobody knows exactly how it works anymore – and nobody dares to touch it. If the file fails, the process stops.
No transparency, no control
VBA code lives inside binary Office files and can hardly be versioned with modern tools like Git. Changes aren't traceable, logging is missing, and permissions can't be managed cleanly.
Security and compliance
Macro-based files are a well-known entry point for malware. Grown "shadow IT" in business departments often emerges without IT's knowledge – a risk for data protection, auditability and compliance reviews.
Limits to growth
As soon as many people work simultaneously or interfaces to other systems are needed, VBA reaches its limits: slow runtimes, dependence on the Office version, no real multi-user capability.
System gaps and duplicate data entry
Data from the ERP or SAP system is transferred manually to Excel, processed via VBA and copied back. Every duplicate entry costs time and produces errors.
Sunsetting technology
VBA is in maintenance mode, VBScript has been deprecated, and web and mobile Office don't run macros. The foundation of your tools is aging – no matter how well they run today.
Our services.
We look at every system individually and only recommend what pays off for you. Not every macro needs replacing – sometimes further development is the better path.
Assessment & analysis
We map your VBA landscape, document the business logic, uncover dependencies and rate each tool by business criticality, risk and effort. The result: a clear priority list and a reliable effort estimate – before you invest.
Further development of existing VBA systems
Your system runs stably and should stay? We clean up and extend existing VBA code, remove outdated functions (e.g. problematic ActiveX elements), add secure database access and document the current state. On request we connect VBA to SQL Server, .NET applications or existing business systems – and prepare the data structure so a later migration becomes easier.
Transformation & migration to modern systems
We transfer the proven business logic of your legacy system step by step into a modern architecture – as a web, desktop or cloud application with central data storage, roles and permissions, logging and clean interfaces. The incremental approach allows parallel operation until all functions are adopted and stable.
Software redevelopment in modern languages
When a technical conversion no longer makes sense, we rebuild your solution from scratch – for sustainable, long-term use. You get a future-proof application with a clear technical foundation, good maintainability and a traceable migration path.
Typical systems we replace.
VBA often sits exactly where it matters – right in the middle of daily business. These are the tools we replace or modernize most often:
- Production planning – grown Excel planning tools with macros for capacities, sequences and dates that need to become centralized and multi-user capable.
- Quoting and calculation tools – Excel-based quote and price calculations made consistent, audit-proof and usable by multiple users.
- Shipping and logistics tools – macros for dispatch planning, label and document generation, tracking and carrier interfaces.
- SAP-adjacent island solutions – Excel/VBA tools running alongside SAP that bridge data manually – we automate the handover via interfaces instead of copy-and-paste.
- Controlling & reporting – reporting macros grown over years, migrated to traceable, automated data pipelines and dashboards.
- Access databases & form solutions – Access applications with VBA form logic, migrated to SQL Server and a modern interface.
- Standalone solutions of all kinds – tooling, inspection, checklist and automation tools carrying individual departments.
Manufacturing and mechanical engineering, retail and logistics, finance and insurance, energy and utilities, healthcare, public administration or services – VBA legacy systems exist everywhere. Manufacturing industry in particular still relies heavily on distributed, organically grown island solutions. We bring industry understanding and technological breadth to find the right target solution for your context.
Modern, maintainable, open.
There is no tool that translates VBA at the push of a button – good modernization is more than a technical translation. We choose the target technology to match requirements, environment and team – including on-premises or cloud operation.
- Python (incl. pandas, openpyxl, xlwings) – strong for data processing, reporting and automation.
- .NET / C# – for robust desktop and enterprise applications.
- Web applications (JavaScript/TypeScript, Node.js, modern frontends) – platform-independent, central, multi-user capable.
- SQL Server / relational databases – for central, secure and analyzable data storage.
- Microsoft Power Platform / Office Scripts / Power Automate – where low-code and M365 integration make sense.
- Interfaces & APIs – clean connections to SAP, ERP, CRM and other business systems.
Step by step, low risk.
This staged approach – instead of a risky "big bang" – keeps downtime risks small and makes every bit of progress visible.

Multi-user & central
Central data instead of scattered Excel versions in department folders.
Future-proof
Independent of Office versions and sunsetting legacy technologies.
Investment protection
Proven business logic is preserved – just implemented better.
Frequently asked questions.
Do I have to replace my VBA system completely?
No. If it runs stably and covers your needs, extending and securing the existing code is often the more economical path. We show you transparently what can be optimized and where a replacement makes sense.
Is Microsoft shutting down VBA?
VBA remains supported but is no longer actively developed (maintenance mode). The related scripting language VBScript is already deprecated and will be disabled by default; web and mobile Office don't execute VBA. For long-lived, business-critical processes an orderly modernization pays off.
Can we keep working during the transition?
Yes. We migrate step by step with parallel operation: the legacy system keeps running until the new functions are adopted and stable.
Which language do you migrate to?
Whatever fits your case – often Python, .NET/C#, a web application with a SQL Server backend, or the Microsoft Power Platform. The choice depends on requirements, environment and maintainability.
Do you also support Access VBA and SAP-adjacent Excel tools?
Yes. We know Excel macros, Access form logic and hybrid setups with databases, as well as tools running alongside SAP/ERP, and connect them via clean interfaces.
How do you estimate cost and duration?
We start with a short assessment, evaluate code quality, scope and risks, and deliver a clear effort estimate with a priority list – before you commit.
Don't let your legacy system become the problem.
The earlier you analyze your VBA landscape, the calmer and cheaper the modernization. The best time is while the system is still running – not when it fails.
